Etiquette

The Sulu and grass skirt is the traditional clothing in Fiji. This is similar to the Sarong (Indonesia's traditional skirt). The Sulu is popular among the Fijian people after Fiji's military Coup d'État of 1987.

Both women and men wear the Sulu and grass skirts!

Women

Especially among women, the Sulu is able to be worn in a lot of different styles. This also means the trend-setter of Fijian clothing is the Sulu.

The Grass skirt's length depended on their marital status. The long one is for married women and the short one is for single women.

Today, women dress more fashionable than the past. Most of women wear a cotton or silk blouse as a top with two or three layers skirst. In special occasions, instead of a blouse women wear a grass top or fabric across the chest. On some other occasions, a long dress with a sulu is worn.

MEN

Generally, in Fiji, men are more unique in their clothing more than men. Fijian men wear the Sulu at the common events for church, functions, and work. They wear grass skirts for special occasions like religious ceremonies.

Some accessaries added to the dress also signify status. Chiefs or a person of high rank usually wear a piece of brown coloured masi around their arms or tied around their waist as a sign of their chiefly status. Sandalwood dust on the hair is also a sign of chiefly status.

Another part of Fiji also has flamboyant styles of dress. People from the village of Dama don't wear grass skirts as their traditional dress.
